How to record audio & video

Audio

To record audio you will need to chose the device that best suits your needs. there are three main microphones (The small Tascam, Large Tascam, Condenser microphone ) The small Tascam is very portable and can be used in most spaces. The Tascam comes with a built in internal microphone. It comes with stereo sound, so it an pick up sound from two direction and also mono. The bigger Tascam uses a auxiliary cord microphones and XLR (External Line Return) this will allow for more defined audio. It also allows for more than one channel, so you can record more than one microphone. Certain microphones will need phantom power, this is just delivering power to the microphone through the large Tascam.

Audio Production

Small Tascam - First make sure you have batteries that are charged. Then insert SD card. Make sure the SD card has a large amount of storage and a high transfer rate. Now turn on the device and format the SD card, this will clear the SD card of any data stored on it. Finally you can go to the location you need to record at. Double press the record button for it to record and to pause press record again, to stop it recording and save it you click the stop button. Do a test recording and adjust the input the so that the bars on the screen go the the arrow.

Larger Tascam - First insert the batteries. Then insert the SD card,it will then ask you to format it. this will clear the data on the SD card. Once you have complete all these steps chose your option of audio. you can have auxiliary or XLR. For the XLR cable plug the cord into the Tascam and one into the microphone. This then will become phantom power because the microphone is being powered by the Tascam. The auxiliary cord will go into the aux in hole. Make sure to also have headphones so you can listen to the audio and see if it is clear or loud enough. Finally go to the location you will be going. Double press the record button for it to record and to pause press record again, to stop it recording and save it you click the stop button. Then do a test record and get the input to where the bars on the screen meet the arrow.

Condenser Microphone - Ensure that your microphone software has been properly installed on your computer. Set your microphone close to your computer. You will want the microphone to be 4 to 16 inches away from the audio you are recording. Make sure you do not have any disruptions near you. Set the microphone's pattern switch to cardioid This will ensure that the microphone is picking up the sound coming directly at it, as opposed to sound from the sides or back. plug your headphones in then plug your microphone. Finally do a test to see if your microphone is at the correct level and if not then adjust the sound to the correct level.

Video Recording

DLSR - DLSR Cameras are very more compact and allow for easy travel. They have a range of functions, each function has it own unique function like the picture below shows the camera on a fully automatic mode where the camera will set the correct settings to the what is in front of it for example it will change the exposure, aperture and shutter speed. There are different lens for DLSRS cameras and this allows the camera to have a very wide angles or a very small angle. this is useful for a pan or dolly(zoom in or out) Setting up A DLSR - First you will need to make sure you have a memory card and you will need to insert in into the DLSR this will allow any photos or videos to take allow the data to store on the SD Card. You should use a SD Card that has a high transfer rate so data can quickly be transferred onto the SD Card and off it. Next you will need a battery, this should be included with the camera, make sure the battery is charged then insert it into the camera. Your DLSR is now set up if you need no extra equipment. If you need a microphone attached and it has a auxiliary cord you should plug this in to side on the camera and slide it onto the top of the camera. If you want to attach a large Tascam then simply place it on top of the tascam and you should see and small screw on top. Hold the camera still and turn the slider on the Tascam to the right to tighten it and if you need to un tighten. To add a light onto you will need a mini ball head mount. simply slide the flat slide onto the top of the camera, then attach the the light by holding it sturdily on top of the mount and screw to the right and left to un tighten.

lighting

Lighting is very important because you will need to make sure the shot is not to over or under exposed. To set up lighting you will need a stand and a led light. These lights are very bright and are can be used indoors and out doors. For the outdoors and indoors you should use a led light if it is not bright enough, this should be positioned to the center point of attention. Setting Up A Light & Stand - The stand will be very compact at first. Then you will need to open by knobs. This will extend the stand. you should not have this on a table and it could fall. Next you should remove the cap off the top and it is important you do not lose this as the top could be easily damaged if not protected. Now place the light plate onto the stand by screwing it on. Setting Up A light - When setting up a light you will need charged batteries which should come with the light. You then need to insert it into the camera by sliding it down and it should click into place. to check if it has charge you can press the button on light to tell you the charge. On this camera it is blue. You can attach multiple cameras to the light and you do not need a stand. this can be added on the side of the lights by sliding them in. You can now attach the light to the stand by sliding it on or screwing it depending on the light. there is a dial on the light witch can increase and decrease the brightness of the light.

Tripods

when using a camera and you need a steady shot for this you should use a tripod. they are very simple to set up and can be adjusted by height. You can also change the position it faces and it has a spirt level where you can tell if it is on a even surface. To place the camera on the tripod you have to screw it onto the plate. They also have two other functions where you can turn in left or right and up or down. this is helpful as you do not need to move and can keep the tripod in the same place and you can get various shots. Setting up A Tripod - when first using the tripod it will be very compact. You will need to turn the knobs on the tripod and this will allow the legs to extend. Each tripod has different levels of height. Once extended tighten the knob back up, this will keep the legs in place. Now remove the plate by sliding it or un clamping it. Now attach the piece of equipment you need to it by screwing it on the the plate the sliding it back on or clamping it back on.

Audio Editing

In premiere Pro you can manipulate the audio by adding gain which will increase the overall output of the audio. you can change the pitch this will alter how the audio will sound. It could go deeper or more high pitch. You can choose to to change the speed and if you want to maintain pitch. making the speed lower will make the clip longer. Making the speed faster will shorten the clip and make it faster. Maintaining the pitch will allow the audio not to be affected. If you choose not to do it will change the audio by making it faster by changing or slower depending on what you choose. If you do not maintain it and make it faster the audio will sound slower or slurred. If it is slower the audio will be faster and more likely to be higher pitched.
